Entering the world of bras for the first time can feel exciting, confusing, and sometimes a little overwhelming - for both kids and parents. At Illusions Lingerie, we’ve spent over 40 years helping families navigate this milestone with comfort, kindness, and confidence. As one of Melbourne’s most experienced bra fitters (many people know me and my curly hair as the Bra Fairy!), I’m here to help make this journey simple and stress-free.

Whether your child is showing signs of development, asking questions, or you just want to be prepared, this guide covers everything you need to know about training bras, fittings, comfort, and what to expect.

What Is a Training Bra?

A training bra (or starter bra) is the gentle step between a simple pull-over crop top and a structured bra with a defined cup. Training bras typically provide minimal support and are designed to offer modest coverage while helping adolescents become accustomed to wearing a bra on a daily basis during early puberty.

Here’s how we explain it to parents in store:

  • Crop tops: Little to no support. Great for the very early stages.

  • Training bras: Light support, no defined cup, perfect for easing into daily wear.

  • First real bras: Bras with a shaped cup (wired or wirefree) that support growing bust tissue and hides the nipple.

We find that many kids feel most comfortable in lightly padded or moulded training bras - especially under school uniforms, where they offer smoother coverage and a little extra confidence.

When Is the Right Time for a Training Bra?

There’s no “right age” for a first bra. Development varies wildly - we see kids anywhere between 8 and 16, all completely normal. However, there are a few signs that it may be time to consider a training bra:

Physical Signs

  • Breast budding (a small, firm bump behind the nipple)

  • Sensitivity or discomfort when running or during sport

  • Wanting more coverage under clothing

  • Noticing their shape changing in fitted tops

If you like visual guides, this aligns with early Tanner stages - the scale doctors use to track physical development. You don’t need to know it in detail, but understanding that these early changes are completely normal can be reassuring.

And yes - the famous pencil test coined by Ann Landers occasionally comes up! While it’s more of a fun conversation point than a fitting method, it highlights when kids are ready for more support. For those unaware, it’s the idea that if the underbust can hold a pencil, it’s time for a bra!

Emotional Readiness Matters Too

Sometimes a child simply wants a bra - for comfort, modesty, or because friends are starting to wear them. That’s just as valid. Most of the time, it’s the parent who brings them in, but more and more kids are expressing interest themselves. Both are great starting points!

How Should a Training Bra Fit?

Fit and comfort are everything - especially at this age.

A well-fitting training bra should:

  • Sit smoothly against the chest - no gaping, no cutting in

  • Have straps that stay put without digging

  • Have a band that’s firm but comfortable

  • Feel soft, stretchy, and easy to wear all day

The most common mistake we see is simply not enough support - often due to a size that’s too small or a style that isn’t suited to their shape.

Many kids love training bras that can cross over at the back, because they work under different outfits and give a little more support. We often choose styles that are sensory-friendly too - soft fabrics, minimal seams, no itchy tags.

If a child is between sizes, we’ll select a style that they can comfortably grow into. Kids’ bodies can change quickly, so we want them to feel supported for as long as possible and ensure the bank of mum and dad are getting value for money.

In-Store Fitting Experience

First fittings don’t need to be scary and at Illusions Lingerie, they aren’t.

When a child comes in for their first bra, I gently introduce myself, make a friendly connection, and reassure them that this isn’t daunting at all. We show a few different styles, let them choose the ones they’re drawn to, and always ask permission before entering the fitting room or helping them adjust the fit.

Our goal is simple: A relaxed, private, respectful experience that builds confidence.

After all, you never forget your first bra fitting.

A typical first fitting takes about 15 minutes, but we never rush and we’re not pushy; for a first fitting we aim to find two everyday bras (beige and black usually) and a sports bra. Once we’ve found a great style together, we ask the child if they’d like to show their parent - making it a collaborative, empowering moment.

And just like the parents who were brought in by their parents 10–20 years ago, we’re now fitting the next generation. This multi-generational service is such a special part of our 40+ year history, we literally assist with your first bra to your last bra!

Tips for Parents Navigating the First Bra Shop

A child’s first bra fitting should feel positive, calm, and celebratory. Here are my top tips:

✔️ Make it a relaxed experience

Grab a coffee / hot chocolate together afterwards, make it a little celebratory moment.

✔️ Follow your child’s lead

If they’re keen, great. If they’re hesitant, give them time.

✔️ Don’t hover

Kids often relax more when they feel supported but not watched. We always ask what they prefer.

✔️ Let them make decisions

Kids are much happier wearing something they’ve chosen themselves - giving them control makes the experience positive and fuss-free.

✔️ Teach them to care for their bras

Hand washing only - machine wash (even on a delicate cycle) can destroy bras! Tip: Wash them in the shower.

✔️ Encourage open communication

Kids grow fast. If something feels tight or uncomfortable, we want them to tell you so we can refit them as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a crop top and a training bra?

Crop tops offer little support, while training bras have light support and help kids transition into daily wear.

Does my child need padding?

Many kids prefer lightly padded or moulded cups for school because they offer smoother coverage and more comfort. It’s totally personal preference.

How many training bras should we buy?

Two or three is ideal - a black, beige, and sports.

When should we come back for another fitting?

Anytime you notice growth or if the bra starts feeling too tight. Most growing kids need a few fittings per year.

How do we care for training bras?

Hand washing helps them last longer - but most kids outgrow their bras before they wear out.

Do you offer fittings for tweens and teens?

Absolutely! It’s one of our specialties, and we go out of our way to make the experience warm, gentle, and comfortable.
