How Often Should You Replace Your Bras? A Bra Fitter’s Guide

How Often Should You Replace Your Bras? A Bra Fitter’s Guide

If I had a dollar for every time someone came into our fitting room wearing a bra that had well and truly reached the end of its life, I’d have quite a collection!

Over the years, I’ve seen bras with stretched-out bands, worn-through fabric, broken wires, and elastic that has completely lost its strength. Many women don’t realise just how much their bra changes over time because it happens gradually. You get used to the way it feels, you adjust the straps a little more, you put up with the wire that occasionally pokes you, and before you know it, your favourite bra is no longer actually supporting you.

Just the other day, a customer came in asking if we had a bra that could cross over at the back because her straps kept falling off her shoulders. When I looked at the bra she was wearing, I immediately knew the problem wasn’t the style of the bra. It was threadbare. It was literally falling apart. The elastic in the straps had deteriorated, the fabric had lost its structure, and the underwire had popped out.

I explained to her that she didn’t actually need a cross-back bra, she just needed a new bra!

A well-fitting bra should support you, feel comfortable, and help your clothes sit properly. When your bra has lost its shape and support, it can affect much more than just comfort. It can affect your posture, cause discomfort, and change the way your clothing fits.

So, How Often Should You Replace Your Bras?

If you're wondering how long bras last, most everyday bras will need replacing every 6–12 months, depending on how often you wear them and how well they're cared for.

And no, this isn’t because we’re trying to sell you more bras! A bra is a hardworking garment, and how long it lasts depends on many factors, including:

  • How many bras you have in your rotation

  • The quality of bra you purchase

  • How often you wear each bra

  • Your bust size and the amount of support your bra provides

  • How you wash and care for your bras

  • Whether you are wearing the correct size and style for your body

Someone who wears the same bra every day will naturally wear it out much faster than someone who rotates between several bras throughout the week.

Those with fuller busts may also find their bras wear out faster because the bra is working harder every day to support more weight. This is why choosing the right size, fit, and support level is so important.

The Signs Your Bra Needs Replacing

Sometimes it’s obvious when a bra has had enough. Other times, the signs are subtle and easy to ignore.

Here are some of the most common signs it’s time for a replacement:

The underwire is poking out

Once the wire has escaped, it’s usually a sign the bra has reached the end of its journey. While there are little tricks and that can temporarily help, it’s likely to pop back out again shortly.

Sore boobs, sore back, sore neck

While discomfort can have many causes, a bra that's no longer providing the support it should can put extra strain on your shoulders, neck, and back. If you've started noticing aches by the end of the day, it may be time for a new bra.

Your band rides up at the back

The band is where most of your support comes from. If it has stretched out and is no longer sitting firmly around your body, your bra can’t do its job properly.

Your straps keep slipping

If your straps are constantly falling down or you’re tightening them further and further, it may not actually be a strap problem. The elastic may have lost its strength, or the bra may no longer be fitting correctly.

You’re wearing it on the tightest hook

A new bra should usually fit comfortably on the loosest hook. Over time, the elastic stretches, and you move through the hooks to maintain the fit. If you’re already on the tightest hook and it’s still loose, your bra has likely lost its elasticity.

The cups are wrinkling, gaping, or not sitting correctly

A bra that once fitted beautifully can change shape over time. Cups can lose their structure, fabric can stretch, and the support panels can weaken.

The fabric and elastic look tired

Fraying, thinning fabric, stretched elastic, balling, and discolouration are all signs your bra is no longer performing at its best.

Why Do Bras Wear Out Faster Than You Think?

Bras are designed to stretch and move with your body, but that also means the materials are under constant pressure.

The elastic fibres in your bra, such as elastane or spandex, naturally break down with repeated wear. Every time you put your bra on, wear it throughout the day, and wash it, the elastic slowly loses its ability to return to its original shape.

A good way to think about it is like a rubber band. Stretch it once and it snaps back. Stretch it hundreds of times and eventually it becomes loose and weak.

The average lifespan of a bra is often estimated around 100 washes, but this can vary greatly depending on how it is cared for.

And remember, they’re called delicates for a reason.

Most bras will recommend hand washing on the care label, and there’s a reason for that. Washing machines, even on a gentle cycle, can be very harsh on bras. I’ve seen many customers come in telling me their washing machine has completely shredded their favourite bra.

Even lingerie bags aren’t always foolproof. The bag can open, hooks can catch, and underwires can become caught in the grooves of the washing machine drum.

Heat is another major culprit. Warm water or heat from tumble dryers damage the elastic fibres in your bra, causing them to lose their stretch much faster.

Your Body Changes, So Your Bra Needs Can Change Too

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming they will always wear the same bra size and style forever.

Our bodies naturally change throughout our lives. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, postpartum changes, hormonal changes, ageing, and lifestyle changes can all affect your bust shape and size.

This is why a professional fitting is so valuable. Sometimes you don’t need a different size, you need a different shape or style of bra that works better with your body today.

At Illusions Lingerie, we often meet customers who have been trying to guess their size for years. Around “80% of women” is the commonly quoted figure for wearing the wrong bra size, but in our fitting rooms, we see that many new customers wearing a bra that isn’t right for their body, whether that’s the size, style, or shape.

That’s why so many people come to us after giving up on the guesswork.

How to Make Your Bras Last Longer

A little extra care can make a big difference.

Rotate your bras

Try to have at 2–3 everyday bras that you can rotate throughout the week. Giving your bras time to rest allows the elastic to recover between wears.

Hand wash when possible

Hand washing in cool water with a gentle detergent is the best way to protect your bras but we understand that can often be the last thing you want to be doing at the end of a busy day, that's why we suggest just taking them in the shower with you!

If you do use a washing machine, always use a lingerie bag, fasten the hooks before washing, and choose the gentlest cycle possible. Just remember that even then, damage can still happen and the manufacturer wont cover the damage.

Air dry your bras

Never put your bras in the tumble dryer. Heat is one of the fastest ways to damage elastic.

Instead, reshape your bra and allow it to air dry naturally.

Make sure you’re wearing the right fit

A correctly fitted bra won’t just feel more comfortable, it will also last longer. Wearing the wrong size can put extra strain on the fabric, seams, and elastic, especially for fuller busts.

What About Bra Accessories?

Bra accessories can be a clever little trick when you need a temporary solution.

Strap converters, clips, and extenders can be useful for certain outfits or occasions, but they aren’t designed to bring an old bra back to life. If your bra has lost its support, the best solution is usually replacing it with one that properly fits your body.
